We expanded our collections with Three Centuries natural handmade French terra cotta floor tiles and brilliant solid colour enamel glazes for the walls. The clays used were allowed to mature for up two years prior to being individually moulded into squares, navettes, tomettes, triples, rond & croix, hexagons and trefles (the shape of the first company logo). Each batch of tiles was allowed to dry for at least thirty days before the initial firing. Then they were glazed one piece at a time and then glazed again before firing or the second time. This long process contributes to each piece becoming an individual piece of art. Eventually and at least a decade later, these beautiful glazes from Provence would inspire American tile makers to experiment with glaze formulas attempting to duplicate some of their beauty. Some came very near to succeeding.
