About Cement Tiles

Perhaps we should start with an understanding of cement and concrete. Cement is to concrete as flour is to bread. In the broadest of terms, powdery flour and water make bread. Powdery cement and water make concrete. So, what is the point? Simply put, although these are called “cement tiles” they are largely concrete bodies. However, the world of tile, design, and architecture has called these tile “cement”  for decades, and so shall we.

When you look at a piece of cement tile from the side, or in section, there will typically be three layers that are easily observed. Speaking in generalities, the top area that is walked on will consist of fine marble dust and pigments. The next layer is composed of Portland cement and sand. Next, there is a slurry mixture of sand and cement for overall strength. Finally, the tiles are pressed, cured, and dried.

The simplicity of the production process, the availability of the raw materials, and the local culture for the design inspiration have all contributed to cement tiles being manufactured around the world. Mission tile in Mexico and Cuban tile in Florida and Cuba are but two examples.

Where to Install Cement Tiles

This product will do well as interior flooring and wall covering both residentially and commercially. However, each installation needs to be evaluated by a local professional in order to determine the suitability of the materials because all projects are different.

Can I Use These Tiles in the Bathroom?

These materials are a good choice for the typical bathroom setting. Given the nature of the product, protection from aggressive elements such as uric acid, nail polish remover, bleach cleaners, and similar substances is needed to get the best-desired results.

Also, please understand the slip-fall question. Cement tile flooring, any flooring for that matter, and wet feet, need to be given the proper consideration. All situations are different based on user behaviors and patterns of usage.

More About Cement Tiles

Cement tile, given the simplicity of production and available color combinations, allow for the maximum range of design expression. A design team, perhaps in conjunction with the homeowner, can feel free to let their collective imagination roam. In many circumstances, that is the name of the game. The American Concrete Institute is a great source of information about concrete in general.
