The Crossings Collection showcases the traditional craft of encaustic, or inlaid, ceramic tiles, a technique that dates back to the Middle Ages when it was commonly used in public buildings and churches across Europe, particularly in England. Over time, this art form spread across Europe and into North America. The collection features a diverse array of designs inspired by Victorian, Art Nouveau, Middle Eastern, Eastern, and Arts and Crafts styles, with matching borders and moldings available for a polished finish.
Encaustic tiles are crafted from high-fired ceramic clay. Designs are pressed or stamped into firm clay, with the impressions filled with contrasting clay colors. Tiles can feature two to six colors, and customers can personalize their selections by choosing from four clay body colors and 23 inlay color options. Once fired and cooled, tiles receive a surface stain to enhance their antique appearance.
These tiles are versatile and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, including kitchens, bathrooms, showers, fireplaces, stair risers, entry floors, patios, wine cellars, and feature walls. In temperate climates, they can also be used around pools and fountains. The Crossings Collection is ideal for residential and commercial settings alike, as exemplified by its installation at The Beachside Hotel on Nantucket Island.
