            An existing concrete patio is a good base for tile as long as it is sound, clean and sloped for drainage. These materials suit it best:

            Porcelain pavers are the lowest-maintenance choice for most concrete patios: they need no sealing, don't fade, and resist stains. Choose natural stone when you want variation, a Versailles or ashlar pattern, or a surface that stays cooler under bare feet in a light color.

            The good news? Non slip floor tiles don't mean you have to sacrifice style. Our collection includes tons of options that give you great traction without looking like industrial flooring.             Installing patio tile over a concrete slab

            1. Check the slab. It should be fully cured (at least 28 days), free of structural cracks, and sloped about 1/4" per foot away from the house.
            2. Clean it. Remove all sealers, paint and efflorescence so the mortar can bond.
            3. Treat cracks. Use a crack-isolation or waterproofing membrane over hairline cracks.
            4. Use exterior-rated materials. That means polymer-modified mortar (ANSI A118.4 or A118.15), with each tile back-buttered for near-full coverage.
            5. Respect movement. Carry the slab's control joints up through the tile and leave a flexible perimeter joint. Grout joints of 1/8" to 3/16" are typical.
            6. Grout and seal. Use exterior-grade grout, and seal natural stone and terracotta.

            Non-slip ratings explained

            Two ratings appear on outdoor tile:

            • R-rating (DIN 51130). The scale runs from R9 to R13, and R11 is the common specification for wet exterior floors and pool surrounds.
            • DCOF (ANSI A326.3). This is the US measure. A wet DCOF of 0.42 is the interior minimum. For exterior wet areas, look for 0.55 or higher.

            Texture, not material, makes a tile non-slip. A polished marble and a tumbled marble behave very differently in the rain.

            Outdoor stone tile: marble, travertine and limestone

            Our outdoor stone tiles are cut thicker and finished textured, tumbled or reclaimed for grip. Marble pavers such as Diana Royal, Skyline and Iris Black come in Versailles and ashlar patterns. Travertine suits pool decks in warm climates. Split-face limestone and marble panels are made for outdoor walls, fireplaces and kitchen surrounds. All natural stone should be sealed after installation and resealed periodically.
