How We Used Hexagon Tiles with Our Designers & Homeowners?

  • Hexagon tiles perform exceptionally in wet environments, especially if they're in the mosaic tile format. And not only for visual reasons. In shower floor tiles, the higher number of grout lines created by small hexagon mosaic tiles increases grip points on the surface, which raises the effective DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) independent of the tile material itself. A 1" or 2" mosaic hexagon provides more traction than an equivalently rated large format tile, because the grout number will do the safety work for you!
  • In our recent bathroom projects, we observed that grout color is frequently the final decision that defines the whole floor. Hexagon tiles can reach 15–20% grout coverage by surface area, particularly in small mosaic formats, which means the grout is part of the design, not a background detail. You can use a high contrast grout to sharpen the overall look and emphasize the tile colors; tone on tone grout softens the pattern and makes the floor read as a continuous surface, which tends to make smaller bathrooms feel larger.
  • There's another trick we love to use with our design consultants in bathroom tile renovations. Small hexagon tiles increase grout density. Large hexagon tiles reduce grout lines and create a more continuous field. Both approaches can make a bathroom feel more spacious, but for different reasons.
  • We've tested these geometric patterns in smaller en-suites and noticed they create an illusion of expanded floor area most reliably when the grout color is kept within two shades of the tile itself.

Heritage architects typically specify elongated hexagons in narrow corridor restorations where they want to correct a proportional problem without structural intervention visually.

 

Hexagon Tile Installation: What Complex Projects Have Taught Us?

Hexagon tile installation requires more preparation than most tile formats. A few things we've learned across our tile projects:

  • Start from the center, not from a wall. Our installers frequently emphasize that with artisan hexagons, beginning from the room's visual center ensures the cut tiles at the perimeter are symmetrical. Starting from a wall and working across is the most common source of an off balance finished floor tile.
  • Dry lay before you set anything. With artisan & handmade hexagon tiles, a manual dry layout across the floor lets you distribute shade variation deliberately, not randomly. Individual cartons can concentrate tiles from one kiln area; blending across cartons before adhesive is applied prevents visible banding.
  • Grout spacing for hexagon tiles: 1/16" for a tight, near-seamless joint; 1/8" where you want the geometry to read more distinctly. Artisan ceramic hexagon tiles with inherent dimensional variation typically require a 1/8" joint to accommodate size differences across tiles in the same lot.
